Canning City won for the first time this season after a 2-1 win against South West Phoenix at Burrendah Reserve. The home side were ahead on 15 minutes, Laurence Cheyne wiped in a low cross for Callum Roberts to tap home. The Phoenix levelled before the break through James McCleary, but the home side won it on 72 minutes. Skipper Roberts, raced past two defenders and put it on a plate for Nathan Hubbard who finished clinically.
It was nowhere near our best performance of the season, however we are relieved for the 3 points,” Canning Coach Pete Lord said. “The Phoenix are a good side and their attackers are extremely dangerous. In the first half we were at 6’s and 7’s defensively, and it showed in the goal we conceded. The second half we got a couple of injuries that dictated our substitutions early and we were forced to adjust quickly. We took the lead and hung on with our hard work fitness and discipline. The lads deserve the win and hopefully it's the start of some good momentum and create confidence in our young squad to know that they can grind out a result if necessary.”
